I don't know what is going on with satellite communication antennas.

The field of antenna design or antenna engineering will likely never go away. With more wireless data traffic and frequency bands, there is a continual push for more bandwidth and efficiency in a smaller size. This is true for consumer electronics and the defense industry.

Ultimately, you should study whatever interests you the most. The caveat is keep things broad. This means don't focus solely on understanding antennas, but you should understand the wireless communication systems around the antenna. Then when future opportunities arise you will be able to more easily find something that fits.

Above the 200 MHz range, I imagine you have some sort of measurement error, or you are measuring series inductance or possibly even some radiation resistance if your wire is a resonant length. It's tough to say without seeing a detailed picture of what is going on and doing some hands on debugging.
