Dear Friends,

Microstrip/patch antenna often describe as low gain and high loss when operating in millimeter wave. That's why DR antenna is often recommend to replace microstrip antenna for applications whose operating frequency is beyond the microwave frequency band.

Does anyone know that how low is the gain?

I checked with someone who has experience with millimeter wave (60 GHz) patch antennas. He said he hasn't heard of patch antennas being described as very lossy at this region.

Basically, it all depends on the loss tangent of the dielectric material at the frequency you are operating at. The loss tangent does typically increase with frequency; however looking at data for Teflon, it is not a dramatic increase.

Hence, I see no reason that patch antennas would be low gain at 60 GHz.

What is a DR antenna?
