hello,
from what i understand, MIMO (as the name says) stand for multiple input and multiple output system where as phased array system involves at least an array of 2 elements that resulting to a one output system.
mimo system also requires more than one antenna, and since these antennas can operate simultaneously, wouldn't the resulting beam of this mimo system be as the resulting of the phased array? (say if both the MIMO and phased array has the same array configuration).
what is the difference between the resulting radiation pattern between phased array and MIMO system? |

So, yes, phased arrays have antennas all transmitting the same signal (possibly delayed or scaled). MIMO typically transmits multiple information streams, or uses switched diversity to improve reception.
So you don't really talk about the radiation pattern for a MIMO system. MIMO systems can use antennas with different radiation patterns or different polarizations, whereas phased arrays typically don't do that. If you have distinct antennas (facing different directions, or with different patterns or polarizations), it greatly helps to separate the two streams. This can then provide you unique paths to transmit more information.
I hope this helps |

So is the take away that...
MIMO systems can be thought of as multiple receivers, with one antenna each, receiving separate bit streams to improve the overall data rate
Whereas...
Phased arrays would help to control the direction of the antenna beam (for whatever purpose)? |
