Hello Forum,
why does the separation between conductors in a transmission line need to be less than a wavelength?
Would the t-line radiate otherwise?
I have read about the Goubau line (single conductor t-line). if it is completely straight it carries energy with a single conductor without radiating it...

Transmission lines typically have conductors separated much closer than a wavelength. If the conductors are significantly far apart (more than a quarter-wavelength), they will radiate.
I've never heard of the "Goubau line". If it is a single conductor, it is not a transmission line. The characteristics of a transmission line (intrinsic impedance, per length capacitance, etc) are calculated by looking at the fields between the two conductors, so a one conductor line doesn't make sense. |
