A planar antenna, I believe, is simply a 2D antenna. That is a dipole, or triangular antenna, or anything that doesn't need a 3D representation.
A patch antenna can only operate if the patch is above a ground plane - otherwise there will be no radiation. Hence, the patch can't be viewed as simply a planar or 2D antenna. |
