Hello,
From the information in antenna-theory.com, there are 2 types of radiator; current radiator (dipole/monopole) and voltage radiator (patch antennas).
in 'pole' antenna system techniques such as meandering can be applied if one wish to miniaturize the radiator. in the meandering technique, the current are forced to flow in a longer path thus the resonant freq will be higher but with an expense of lower gain <- is this correct?
If it is, how can / is there any thechniques that can be applied for miniaturizing patch antennas (voltage radiator)? I found some articles on slot and shorting pin loding techniques but they doesn't seem to be straight foward (such as the articles never mention on the exact position/place for the shorting pins ect...).
besides using high permitivity substrates, can the meandering technique be applied on the patch antenna as well? |

Meandering a dipole increases the length of the dipole - the result is a lower resonant frequency (remember, the dipole type antenna should be about a half wavelength). The meandering increases the self-capacitance of the antenna, which lowers the bandwidth. The gain won't necessarily decrease with this technique.
For a patch, you have to meander properly, you might be able to shrink the footprint, but make sure you understand the mechanism of radiation before you try or the results won't be good. |
