I put a whole section on Smith Charts and impedance matching using the Smith Chart here:

The Smith Chart is very useful in building real antennas, because you can observe the frequency response of your antenna in a vectorized format (i.e. magnitude and phase of reflection coefficient), which enables more insight than scalar measurements (VSWR, s11, etc). |
