I want to make a broadband dipole to cover 440 - 470 mhz. If I use 3/4 in. diameter tube and feed it with 75 ohm coax, EZNEC software shows very low VSWR for entire range, and the gain is just a high as thin wire antenna.
What is the down side of a fat diameter antenna?
I thought a wide band antenna is a compromise. I don't see it, other than the extra expense in metal and increased wind resistance. |

There is no performance downside
more volume = more bandwidth
If you have the volume, use it |

A narrowband antenna can act as a filter against strong out of band signals that could saturate the first amplification stage of your rx. A narrow band antenna may give you more options to select a cheaper/lower power better NF LNA.
Not that I am an expert in them(before my time), but I beleive that ealry crystal radios very much needed a narrow band antenna(narrow band impedence match) to tune to radio broadcasts. |
