I have read, with no explanation, that there would be approximately a -26db loss from a LHCP wave being received by a RHCP Cavity Backed Spiral antenna. Could anybody verify this, and provide the basic theory involved to get to this figure?

That will come from an empirical measurement of the polorisation. All it means is that the antennas are not perfectly circularly polarised. That said -26db is pretty good and once you have real world reflections etc it would probably be pointless trying to improve it.
