 Posted: Mon Dec 22, 2014 5:28 pm    Post subject: Uniform Linear Array made omnidirectional Hi all, I am new here. If anyone has advice for me please let me know . This question is regarding uniform linear array (ULA) antennas. Assuming that I use a ULA with number of antennas = 32 and inter element spacing = 1/2. Then the main lobe beamwidth is 2/16 (where the gain is 1). This is a an example of a directional gain. Reference is the book by David Tse Chapter 7 (page 302 303): http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/~dtse/Chapters_PDF/Fundamentals_Wireless_Communication_chapter7.pdf Can someone give me an example of ULA where the gain is omnidirectional?

 Posted: Fri Feb 13, 2015 4:12 am    Post subject: "Omnidirectional" really means uniform radiation in a single plane (a lot of times it's the terrestrial plane). This is different than "isotropic" which means uniform radiation in ALL directions. So you CAN have a high gain omni pattern -- it will look like a flat disc. By this definition, all linear arrays have an omni array factor (it is rotationally symmetric about the array axis).
