Trolling through the FCC OET website, I saw an unusual patch antenna. Instead of being manufactured from a piece of printed circuit board material, the elements were made of metal squares mounted on standoffs over a solid metal ground plane

Is there any performance advantage by using this type of construction as opposed to PC board construction?
