We are developing a new full duplex radio system. Currently we are using a helical short antenna and a standard dipole quarter wavelength antenna. You can see a picture of our radio at www.multivoiceradio.com

When our radio is worn on the hip with a belt clip we loose at least half our range.

We use a standard coaxial connector and we transmit on 902-928 MHz.

What styles of antennas should we explore to help reduce the problem of the antenna being close to the body. I read that loop antennas may be a solution, please let me know your thoughts and ideas.

Thanks for all your help

Welcome to the world of wearable antennas. It sucks.

In principal, the loop antenna should perform better when placed on the body (near field should be magnetic field dominant, which is less affected by electrical conductivity). However, this study was done and didn't see much improvement:

You probably have to experiment to see what will be the best for you.
